PCT Japanese National Phase Application

Please follow the nine steps below to obtain the cost estimate of entering the Japanese national stage as well as preparing and filing a Japanese translation. Then, please click "calculate" to see the estimate.

Step 1.  Please have an internationally published PCT application (also known as a "world laid open publication") on hand.

Note: If you do not have a world laid-open publication on hand, you may not be able to enter correct values in the text boxes below.

Step 2. Enter the number of days left before the 30-month deadline* to enter into the Japanese national phase.

* The 30-month deadline: The national phase application must be filed within 30 months from the priority date.

Step 3. Enter the total word count found in the title of the invention, the claims, the specification and the abstract .

Step 4. Enter the number of drawings in the specification

Note: After translated, figures must be scanned and edited for the electronic filing, and filed as images with the Japan Patent Office (JPO).

Step 5. Enter the number of numerical formulas, chemical formulas and tables in the specification.

Step 6. Would you like to file a translation of the Amendment under Article 19? If "Yes", enter the number of the English words for the entire application, (not just for the amendment under Article 19), in which the amended claims were incorporated.

Note: The claims amended under Article 19 can replace the original claims at the time of filing the translation. Therefore, if you file the amendment claims at this time, you can eliminate the cost for translating the original claims.

Note: Filing a translation of an Amendment under Article 34 is not compulsory. In fact, it is generally not recommended at the time of filing the translation. If you would like to file a translation of an Amendment under Article 34, we recommend you do so later when filing for a Request for an Examination.  If you are not sure as to how to proceed, please consult with one of our Japanese patent attorneys.

Step 8. Would you like to file a Request for Examination at the time of entry into the Japanese national phase?  (Note: You must file a Request for Examination within three years from the international application date.
