This Is the First Time Premier Japanese
Companies and Research Institutions Will Unveil Their
Innovations in the East Coast In the Hopes of Finding Corporate
Partners in the U.S.
Japan Technology Group will present
a free showcase of Japanese innovations in the field of Medical
and Physical Sciences, Food, Cosmetics and Web-Software. The
showcase will be held on March 18, 2008, at the Science Center
in Philadelphia (3701 Market Street). Registration will begin at
8AM.
The showcase will feature Japan’s premier research institutions,
and graduate universities specializing in bio, material, and
computer sciences, such as Nagoya University, Tokyo University
of Science and Kyushu Institute of Technology. Aside from
universities, there will also be such companies as Ogawa & Co,
BITS Co, Red-Ion Medical, and BioMatrix Research Inc being
showcased. This event is an outcrop of the Japanese government’s
recent deregulation that made it possible for researchers at
national universities to seek-out alliances with the private
sector including those abroad.
From the stand point of the
universities, the deregulation has been a double-edged sword; on
the one hand , it has helped open up their research to private
corporations but on the other this reform has meant cutbacks in
government funding leaving them no choice but to seek revenue
elsewhere. From the standpoint of industry, however, the reform
presents an opportunity to find innovative core technologies
generated by academia for potential development and
commercialization.
Taro Yaguchi, president of Japan
Technology Group, hopes this showcase will set a precedence for
Japanese universities and their start-up companies. "This is the
first time several Japanese companies and universities are
actively promoting their out-licensing portfolio technologies in
search for collaborative partners outside of Japan. This event
signifies the beginning of a trend where the Japanese start-up
businesses and research institutions are attempting to globalize
their operations to the United States."
There will be sixteen technologies
showcased during the event, ranging from topics on Inflammatory
Diseases ( Chronic Hepatitis C) and Obesity, Medical Devices and
Diagnostics, System for Monoclonal Antibody Production, Foods
and Cosmetics, as well as Web-Software.
